Entry Passes
Anyone can buy an annual pass, which gives unlimited entry to the forest. You can register up to 5 vehicles, but only one can enter the forest at a time.
Directions
to Karura
Karura Forest is 6 km from the city centre in the northern suburbs of Nairobi. It is divided into the main forest and the smaller Sigirya block by Limuru Road
By Car
- Gate A. Main entry off Limuru Road across from the Belgian Embassy (road access to KFEET Center and FKF forest office)
- Gate B. Closed to the public: service gate only
- Gate C. Also known as ‘Sharks Gate’ after the nyama choma (roast meat) establishment outside the forest across the Kiambu Road. Great for biking and dog-walking along designated paths.
- Gate D. Pedestrian entrance at the end of the ICRAF access lane off UN Avenue
- Gate E. Pedestrian entrance to Sigiria section off Limuru Road (parking at Gate A opposite)
- Gate F. Main Sigiria entrance at end of Thigiri Lane off Thigiri Ridge Road. Parking inside gate.
By Public Transport
- To the main Forest gate Limuru Road, FKF and KFS Station Manager administrative offices (Gate A and Gate E) - Matatu (from Nairobi city centre to Belgian Embassy on Limuru Road). Numbers 11B, 106, 107, or 116 (southbound only).
- To Sharks Gate Kiambu Road (Gate C) - Matatu (from Nairobi city centre to Kiambu via Kiambu Road). Numbers 100, 120, 121, 116.
- To the Kenya Forest Environment Education Trust office and River Café… Located inside the forest: entry required via main Limuru Road gate.
- To the FKF and KFS Station Manager administrative offices… Use Gate-A. Offices are located 100m from the gate.
